Pivots

What it are there pivots?

Pivots are the rotations around the child's own axis in position lying on your stomach. The child spinsyouI am like an indicationóthe clock and in the opposite direction pushes off the ground with his handsa.

Pivots

When should a child's pivots appear?

First children's piwot trials already reveal themselves around 5 months oldHowever, the most common are approx. 7 months of age and this is when they are most intense. For pivots to be possible, the child must be able to push off the ground with his hands. It is also important that it extends the side of the trunk to which the weight is transferred. This is why the surface on which the child lies must be hard enough for the child to push off. This can be, for example, a foam mat on the floor. On a substrate that is too soft, the child will collapse and find it difficult to perform pivots.

Why does a child need pivots in development?

Via pivots child is preparing to crawl. The first pivots are slow, the baby turns for a very long time and only by a few centimetres. With time, he perfects this skill and pivots at the speed of light and the trunk is raised very high. The child is already able to carry body weight around your belly button and then lower down around your lumbar spine and pubic symphysis.

The more advanced are pivotsThe more the legs are involved. At first, the child pushes off with his arms only, but over time he begins to bend the leg on the side opposite to the direction in which he is turning.

Does my child need to pivot?

Yes. All children need pivots in order to develop properly and be able to carry their weight in higher positions. However, not all children are fans of this activity. Some perform pivots occasionally and for short periods of time. Other children will pivot frequently and very quickly, but with great enjoyment. Certainly children who spend a lot of time lying on their stomachs on the mat will pivot faster and more often, which will pay off in the future with good dexterity and trunk stability at later stages of development.

Pivots

Can my child pivot only one way ?

Not if you see that the child turns around the navel one way only - encourage them to rotate to the opposite side. It is important that both sides of the trunk are shortened alternately during pivoting. Otherwise, subsequent developmental stages e.g. crawling, can also be performed asymmetrically and this can result in future postural defects.

How do I encourage my child to peigot?

It's very simple! Place your baby on his stomach on the foam mat and lie down next to him, below his head (roughly at the baby's nine or three o'clock position). Encourage him or her to come closer to you, the baby will start to push with his or her hands on the ground and thus come closer to you. The second way is to place a favourite toy next to your baby. Remember that there should be nothing else on the mat - your baby may then lose interest in this object and quickly start playing with something else.
