What is Social Skills Training about?

Training takes place once a week in a fixed group - for a specific cycle (usually one full term). Under the guidance of a TUS Therapist, young people practise and acquire further skills, not in theory but with the help of concrete tasks. The classes improve cooperation, boldness and allow them to overcome their own barriers in a situation that is safe for everyone.

What makes TUS at Kids Medic different? The fact that after each class the Therapist has time for the parents to discuss the current progress and to listen to the parents how the child is coping in everyday life, what difficulties he/she most often encounters - in order to make the programme of classes as appropriate to the needs of the group as possible. We do not work on fixed lesson plans, we follow the children and their needs.

When is social skills training needed?

TUS includes two types of activities, so we invite children who:

  • face the problem of shyness,
  • are embarrassing,
  • have trouble with public speaking, social exposure,
  • but also children who have problems with social norms, over-stimulation, self-control.

What it looks like social skills training?

Meetings between the child and the Psychologist are usually cyclical. They are based on building trust between the child and the Therapist, who talks to the child about various topics as needed. These discussions always take place in the form of play and various games to make the child feel safe and comfortable.

Who is social skills training for?

For children from 9 to 18 years of age.

How long do the classes last?

A single class with a Psychologist lasts: 45 minutes

How long does the whole therapy take?

Before starting the group, patients are invited to a consultation with a Psychologist, which lasts 60 minutes and includes a short interview with the parent followed by observation of the child. The consultation allows us to match children to the appropriate age group, where children are also matched on skills and areas for development. Occasionally, the Psychologist may suggest participation in one-to-one activities, prior to group activities.

How to prepare for a visit?

The child should know where you are going so that they do not feel deceived by the parent. It may be helpful to show the child pictures of the surgeries and the TUS practitioner on the website. The child should know that TUS activities take place in appropriately sized therapy groups and that no other children will be present. The psychologist will provide therapy by adapting the activities to the age and needs of the children. There will be talks, individual and group tasks, games, play or other therapy methods.
